Jakarta: UNESCO has elected Indonesia as a member of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) for the 2026–2030 term, marking a significant diplomatic achievement for the country.According to Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry, the election took place in Paris during the 11th General Assembly of States Parties to the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage at UNESCO Headquarters.
Indonesia secured its seat in a competitive race within the Asia-Pacific Group (Group IV), where four out of six candidate countries were elected. Alongside Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, and Cambodia were also selected.Indonesian Ambassador to France and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Mohamad Oemar, described the election as a major responsibility, affirming Indonesia’s commitment to actively contribute to global cultural policymaking.He stated that during its tenure, Indonesia will focus on promoting inclusive implementation of the 2003 Convention, strengthening the role of local communities, and enhancing international cooperation in cultural preservation.
Meanwhile, Deputy Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, I Gusti Agung Ketut Satrya Wibawa, emphasized that Indonesia will utilize its position to advocate for the interests of developing countries in safeguarding cultural heritage.The Intergovernmental Committee consists of 24 members elected from 185 States Parties and plays a key role in evaluating cultural heritage nominations and shaping global policies for heritage protection.Indonesia’s successful election reflects strong international confidence in its ongoing efforts to preserve cultural heritage and promote it as a pillar of peace, solidarity, and sustainable development.
