Iran’s Assembly of Experts has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader, succeeding his father Ali Khamenei, according to a report by Press TV late Sunday. The decision comes days after Ali Khamenei was reportedly killed in a U.S.–Israeli airstrike on February 28, an event that has significantly heightened tensions in the region.
Mojtaba Khamenei, a mid-ranking cleric known for his close ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was chosen by the Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for appointing and overseeing Iran’s Supreme Leader. The development marks a major political shift in Iran, as leadership transitions at the highest level are rare and closely watched both domestically and internationally.
