During his governments, he consistently described the Kashmir issue as an important component of Pakistan’s foreign policy and supported the aspirations of the Kashmiri people at international forums. He also emphasized the development of Azad Jammu and Kashmir as a national priority.Eight years earlier, on Kashmir Solidarity Day in February 2018, Nawaz Sharif had visited Muzaffarabad along with Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

One of the most symbolic moments of the visit was when Maryam Nawaz Sharif carried the flag of Azad Jammu and Kashmir on her shoulders and head throughout the public gathering.
