Barrister Nawab Babar Khan
(London) After the second world war the great powers laid the foundation of a new world order. The second world war showed the world inter alia carnage, tyranny, mass murders, genocide, a holocaust, human rights abuses, new deadly weaponry, atomic bombs and the possibility of world destruction. The United Nations was created as a universal body for many purposes. The pertinent role of the United Nations was to ensure global peace and prevent wars. The United Nations passed resolutions, which formed the basis of international law.
Furthermore, five countries have a unique status as members of the United Nations. These states are, namely, the USSR (Russia), USA, China, United Kingdom, and France. These five states can veto any proposed resolution at the United Nations Security Council. Furthermore, cold war rivalry played out at the United Nations Security Council.International treaties were signed so as to ensure peace and stability throughout the world. In 1962, the Cuban missile crisis was a dangerous chapter in world history with the possibility of nuclear war between the USA and USSR. However, the cold war ended in December 1991 with the collapse of the USSR.
The world became accustomed to a rules based world order, which was set in place after the second world war. The whole purpose was to avoid a global war of such a magnitude. At present, it seems that the international norms and universal rules based order are incrementally eroding. At present, there are dozens of conflicts throughout the world. Numerous countries have no regard for international law. There is no state willing to enforce international law. Countries are unilaterally making decisions contrary to international law and/or customs without any concerns regarding potential universal repercussions. Countries use force and/or attack countries without a United Nations Resolution, which is a departure from the international rules based mechanism.
At times, it seems the world may be heading back to the 1930s again where might was right. It can be said that with might states have always claimed to be right. Cheerleading does not help to terminate wars. The Russia-Ukraine war is without logic and makes no sense whatsoever. The people of Ukraine have suffered immensely, and the world has failed miserably to stop this horrendous war. The United Nations has done all that it could in certain matters but has been helpless on many occasions. The middle east is on fire and this fire needs to be put out before it destroys the economics of the entire region and beyond. The world is heading towards more wars and a global recession. Global leaders need to lead the world to peace, progress, prosperity, and economic growth.
