JAKARTA, Indonesia (IN) — President Prabowo Subianto has set an ambitious three-year target for Indonesia to end its dependence on imported oil and LPG, as the government accelerates efforts to achieve national energy self-sufficiency.Speaking in Jembrana, Bali, on Tuesday during the launch of the 100 GWp solar power program, Prabowo said Indonesia should no longer need to import oil and should work toward eliminating LPG imports as soon as possible.“We must not import even a single barrel of oil anymore,” the president said during an official broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat.
Prabowo said the energy independence drive would be supported by the development of 100 gigawatts (GW) of solar power capacity, alongside geothermal energy projects, domestic gas-field development, and increased oil production, or lifting.The scale of the solar program is significant. Indonesia currently has around 88 GW of total installed electricity capacity from coal, oil, gas, geothermal, and other sources. The government therefore aims to add solar capacity exceeding the country’s entire existing power capacity within just three years.“With 100 gigawatts, with our geothermal resources, gas fields, and oil lifting that must continue to rise, we must not import even a single barrel of oil anymore,” Prabowo said.The president emphasized that renewable energy development must go hand in hand with strengthening Indonesia’s domestic oil and gas sector.
He argued that reducing dependence on foreign energy supplies is essential to protecting the country’s sovereignty and economic resilience.Prabowo also called on the Red and White Cabinet to work with determination and focus to manage Indonesia’s natural resources for the benefit of the Indonesian people.Despite the scale of the challenge, Prabowo expressed confidence that the government could achieve its energy independence targets in less than three years, potentially accelerating Indonesia’s transition toward a more self-reliant and renewable-based energy system.
