Sri Lankan High Commissioner Meets Cuban Ambassador in Islamabad, Discuss Bilateral Cooperation and Global Security

Islamabad – March 11, 2026: The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Damián Cordero Torres, paid a courtesy call on the High Commissioner of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in Pakistan, Fred Senevirathne, in Islamabad.The meeting was held in a cordial and friendly atmosphere and was also attended by Agustin Chrysty Ruban and Chathurika Sankali, who serve as Acting High Commissioner and Minister Counselor of the Sri Lankan mission respectively.During the meeting, both sides discussed the longstanding diplomatic relations between Cuba and Sri Lanka and explored opportunities to further strengthen cooperation in key sectors including health, education, culture, and agriculture.

The two diplomats also exchanged views on the evolving security situation in the Middle East, emphasizing the urgent need for diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and promoting a ceasefire, particularly involving the governments of Israel and the United States.High Commissioner Senevirathne acknowledged Cuba’s longstanding solidarity with Sri Lanka, highlighting the country’s medical assistance during the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and its support during the dengue fever outbreak in 2009. He also appreciated Cuba’s role in providing higher education opportunities to Sri Lankan students in Cuban universities.

Ambassador Torres, in turn, expressed gratitude for Sri Lanka’s consistent support in international forums against the economic blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba.The meeting reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to strengthening diplomatic engagement and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
