MUZAFFARABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has nominated Dr Muhammad Najeeb Naqi Khan as the party’s candidate for the presidency of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.The decision was taken following consultations among the PML-N leadership, with the party directing Dr Najeeb Naqi to submit his nomination papers for the presidential election.Dr Najeeb Naqi is a senior PML-N leader from Azad Jammu and Kashmir and has previously served as a minister, including holding the health portfolio. He belongs to Sudhnoti district and represents the Palandri area.
The AJK Election Commission has announced that the presidential election will be held on September 24, 2026. Candidates will submit their nomination papers on September 19 from 10:00am to noon, while scrutiny will also be conducted on the same day. Candidates can withdraw their nominations by 11:30am on September 23.Polling will take place at the AJK Legislative Assembly Secretariat in Muzaffarabad from 10:00am to 1:00pm on September 24, after which the votes will be counted and the result announced the same day.The office of AJK president has remained vacant since January following the death of Barrister Sultan Mahmood. The duties of the president have been performed by the Speaker of the AJK Legislative Assembly in an acting capacity.
