Fuel Price Hike Unbearable Burden on Public, Says Hafiz Naeemur Rehman

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, chief of Jamaat-i-Islami, on Tuesday strongly criticized the government over the recent surge in petroleum prices, terming it an excessive burden on citizens already facing economic hardship.Addressing a press conference in Lahore, he said the increase of Rs55 per litre in petrol and high-speed diesel—linked to global disruptions caused by tensions involving United States, Israel, and Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz—has severely impacted the common man.He noted that despite claims by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of rejecting further hikes, petrol and diesel prices remain at Rs321.17 and Rs335.86 per litre, respectively. He added that a 20% increase in the petroleum development levy has further raised fuel costs, affecting journalists, students, workers, and motorcyclists.

The JI leader urged the government to reduce prices by cutting the levy and called for immediate relief measures, particularly for thermal power plants. He also demanded an investigation into agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), alleging mismanagement amid what he described as a “war-like” economic situation.Criticizing the recent Rs200 per litre increase in the high-octane fuel levy, Rehman said the move places additional strain on the public, despite government claims that it targets only affluent vehicle owners.

He also condemned the ongoing Middle East conflict, accusing the US and Israel of failing in their objectives, and criticized former US President Donald Trump over his handling of the situation. Rehman praised Palestinians and Iranians for their resistance and urged Pakistan to clearly identify its adversaries to protect its defense, nuclear program, and national interests.
