OpenAI has announced that it will shut down its social media app Sora, a platform that quickly gained popularity for sharing short-form videos generated by artificial intelligence. In a brief statement posted on X on Tuesday, OpenAI confirmed it is “saying goodbye to the Sora app” and will soon share details on how users can save the content they created.“What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing,” the company said.Launched in September by the makers of ChatGPT, Sora allowed users to create highly realistic videos from simple text prompts.
However, the platform quickly drew criticism from advocacy groups, academics, and experts.Critics raised concerns about the potential misuse of AI-generated videos, including the spread of non-consensual content and highly convincing deepfakes. Experts also warned that such tools could contribute to harmful online behavior and excessive scrolling, often referred to as doomscrolling.
OpenAI has not yet provided a specific timeline for the shutdown but said further details will be announced soon.
