Sri Lanka High Commission, Partner Missions to Commemorate Vesak Day in Taxila

Islamabad: The High Commission of Sri Lanka, in collaboration with several diplomatic missions representing Buddhist heritage countries in Islamabad, will organize a commemorative programme to mark Vesak Day on May 1, 2026.

In preparation for the event, the third meeting of the organizing committee was held on April 2, 2026, at the official residence of High Commissioner Fred Senevirathne. The meeting was attended by ambassadors and representatives from Thailand, Viet Nam, Myanmar, and Nepal, who reaffirmed their full support and commitment to ensuring the success of the initiative.The commemorative programme will take place at the historic Dharmarajika Buddhist heritage site and the Taxila Museum, located in the ancient Gandhara region. The event will feature religious observances at Dharmarajika, followed by a religious conference at the Taxila Museum.Senior representatives of the Government of Pakistan, along with devotees from participating countries, are expected to attend.

The High Commission will also facilitate the visit of a revered Buddhist monk from Sri Lanka, who will deliver a Dhamma sermon and provide spiritual guidance during the programme.This joint initiative highlights a shared commitment among participating nations to promote Buddhist cultural and religious heritage, while strengthening spiritual diplomacy and fostering collaboration in Pakistan.
