May 1, 2026: Russia and Pakistan are celebrating the 78th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, highlighting decades of cooperation and a renewed commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.In the early years following Pakistan’s independence, the Soviet Union extended significant economic support to the newly formed state, including the provision of tens of thousands of tons of food grain on a gratuitous basis. This assistance played an important role in stabilizing the country’s economy during its formative years.Cooperation further deepened in the 1970s, when, with Moscow’s support, Pakistan initiated construction of major infrastructure projects. These included the Karachi Steel Mills, key thermal power plants such as Muzaffargarh, Multan-II, and Guddu, as well as a radio station near Islamabad. The Soviet Union also contributed to the establishment of Pakistan’s oil and gas sector and supported agricultural development.
Today, the development of mutually beneficial partnership with Pakistan remains a priority in Russia’s South Asia policy. Relations between Moscow and Islamabad continue to expand steadily, built on mutual respect and aligned perspectives on major international issues.The Russia–Pakistan Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation continues to function actively. Bilateral trade between the two countries surpassed $1 billion in 2023, reflecting growing economic engagement.Currently, Russian and Pakistani pharmaceutical companies are preparing to launch a joint insulin production project in Pakistan, signaling a new phase of cooperation in the healthcare sector.Educational ties are also strengthening. For the 2025–2026 academic year, the Russian government allocated 152 scholarships to Pakistani students for higher education in Russian universities. At the same time, interest in learning the Russian language is increasing among students in Pakistan.
On the global stage, Russia and Pakistan maintain close coordination at international forums, including the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which plays a key role in ensuring regional security and sustainable development across Eurasia.Pakistan is also regarded as an important partner for Russia in addressing regional and global security challenges.Both countries have reaffirmed their commitment to further enhancing cooperation across political, economic, educational, cultural, and humanitarian sectors, marking the anniversary as a symbol of enduring friendship and future collaboration.
