Merit or Political Reconciliation? Internal Criticism Intensifies Over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cabinet

The politics of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has once again reached a crucial turning point. Following the expansion of the provincial cabinet, not only did newly appointed ministers, advisers, and special assistants take oath, but dissenting voices also began emerging from within the ruling party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).During a dignified ceremony held at the Governor House in Peshawar, Governor Faisal Karim Kundi administered the oath to the new cabinet members. However, alongside this political development, questions regarding merit, consultation, and regional representation have further heated the political atmosphere. While the government describes the move as an effort to improve administrative efficiency and governance, senior party leaders are openly expressing reservations over the process.

The provincial government has significantly expanded the cabinet by appointing six new ministers, four advisers, and eight special assistants. The oath-taking ceremony at the Governor House was attended by government officials, political leaders, and individuals from various walks of life.According to government circles, the cabinet expansion is aimed at making administrative affairs more effective and improving the performance of different departments. Officials believe that the inclusion of new members will not only bring political stability to the provincial government but will also ensure representation for various regions of the province. However, immediately after the cabinet expansion, concerns and disagreements began surfacing from within PTI itself. Senior PTI leader and former Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Shah Farman, expressed disappointment, stating that he was not taken into confidence regarding the formation of the cabinet.

While congratulating the newly appointed members, he pointed out that despite being a member of the party’s Internal Accountability Committee, he was neither consulted nor asked for input regarding the appointments.Shah Farman’s statement is being viewed as politically significant because he is considered one of PTI’s senior and influential leaders. His remarks have created the impression that consultation is lacking in key party decisions, a situation that could deepen internal divisions within the party. On the other hand, former provincial minister Nek Muhammad also strongly criticized the appointments made in the cabinet. He claimed that the selections were based on political considerations rather than merit. According to him, leaders such as Sohail Afridi have been ignoring party workers and senior members instead of maintaining coordination with them.Nek Muhammad further alleged that some cabinet members were included solely on the basis of political affiliations or family connections, while important districts, including North and South Waziristan, were completely ignored. He also questioned the absence of representation for districts like Bannu, warning that such decisions could create a sense of deprivation among the people of those areas.

Political analysts believe that although the expansion of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet appears to be an effort to strengthen governance, the growing internal disagreements may create challenges for the government in the future — especially at a time when PTI is already facing political pressure, legal challenges, and internal factionalism.Analysts also argue that if allegations regarding the neglect of regional balance and merit intensify, they could further increase unrest within the party. On the other hand, the government will need to take dissatisfied leaders into confidence in order to maintain political stability and ensure that administrative affairs are not affected. How successful the new Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet proves to be in practical governance will become clearer in the coming days. However, the political debate that began immediately after the oath-taking ceremony has already made it evident that the province’s politics may witness even more significant and turbulent developments in the near future.
