Chairman Senate Yousaf Raza Gilani Praises Rwanda’s Resilience at Genocide Commemoration in Islamabad

Islamabad, April 7, 2026: Chairman Senate Yousaf Raza Gilani attended a solemn ceremony marking the 32nd anniversary of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, held in Islamabad under the auspices of the High Commission of Rwanda in Pakistan. Serving as Chief Guest, he expressed deep solidarity with the people of Rwanda and paid tribute to their extraordinary journey of recovery and unity.

Addressing the gathering, the Chairman Senate described the 1994 tragedy as one of the darkest chapters in modern history, noting that over a million innocent lives were lost in a span of just one hundred days. He emphasized that while the pain of the past remains profound, Rwanda’s remarkable transformation stands as a powerful example of resilience, reconciliation, and national rebuilding.He commended the leadership and people of Rwanda for turning immense suffering into a story of hope and progress, highlighting how the country has emerged stronger through unity and determination.

He said Rwanda’s journey offers valuable lessons to the world on healing, peacebuilding, and inclusive development.The Chairman Senate also noted that the people of Pakistan deeply relate to such historical tragedies, recalling the sacrifices made during independence. He said these shared experiences strengthen bonds of empathy and mutual respect between nations.Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to peace and human dignity, he stressed the importance of standing against hatred, promoting tolerance, and ensuring justice for all communities. He called on the international community to learn from Rwanda’s example and work collectively to prevent such atrocities in the future.

The event was attended by federal ministers, diplomats, parliamentarians, and members of civil society. The Chairman Senate also appreciated the efforts of Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, acknowledging her role in promoting awareness and strengthening bilateral ties, and reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering solidarity with the people of Rwanda.
