Russia Welcomes Ceasefire as Region Pulls Back from Wider Conflict

Russia has welcomed a last-minute ceasefire agreement reached between the United States, Israel, and Iran, describing it as a positive step toward reducing dangerously high tensions in the region.Speaking at a routine briefing on Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow had consistently called for de-escalation and a shift toward dialogue. He emphasized that resolving disputes through negotiations, rather than military action, remains the only sustainable path forward.

The ceasefire, agreed for an initial two-week period, comes at a critical moment as fears of a broader regional conflict had intensified. The situation had been further aggravated by warnings from U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened strikes on Iranian infrastructure if Tehran failed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz — a key global oil route.Despite the announcement, uncertainty persists. Reports of continued airstrikes in parts of the Middle East emerged even after the deal was made public.

Meanwhile, shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz remains largely halted, with major companies saying conditions are still too unstable to resume normal operations.Details of the agreement have not been disclosed, leaving questions about its scope and enforcement. While mediators, including Pakistan, suggested the ceasefire could extend to Lebanon, Israel has rejected that claim and reportedly intensified its operations there.Russia, a close ally of Iran, has strongly criticized recent U.S. and Israeli actions, calling them unjustified aggression.

Although Moscow and Tehran signed a strategic partnership agreement last year, it does not include a formal mutual defense clause. As the fragile truce takes hold, the international community is watching closely, hoping it can prevent further escalation and create space for meaningful diplomatic engagement.
