ISLAMABAD, Aug 28 (IN): Pakistan staged a dramatic comeback to defeat South Africa 4-3 in a penalty shootout during the classification round of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026.The match ended 4-4 after regulation time, with Pakistan goalkeeper Waqar emerging as the hero by making two crucial saves in the shootout to secure victory for his team.South Africa made a strong start, with Del Lora Trevor opening the scoring in the eighth minute before Kasim Dayan doubled the advantage in the 18th minute.
Pakistan responded with two quick goals. Afraz pulled one back in the 21st minute, while Muhammad Imad scored a field goal a minute later to level the match at 2-2.Rana Waheed Ashraf then put Pakistan ahead in the 32nd minute with a brilliant finish, giving his side a 3-2 lead.South Africa fought back in the second half, with Kasim Mustafa scoring in the 40th and 55th minutes to restore a 4-3 advantage.
