Ashgabat marked the Day of the Turkmen Carpet on Sunday with vibrant celebrations held at the National Museum of the Turkmen Carpet, highlighting both traditional heritage and modern interpretations of the centuries-old craft.The event featured live demonstrations of intricate weaving techniques, where participants showcased a blend of traditional and contemporary carpet patterns. Alongside the exhibitions, artists presented musical and dance performances, adding a festive cultural atmosphere to the occasion.
A formal ceremony was also held during the event, where representatives of the International Organisation of Turkic Culture (TURKSOY) awarded a diploma in recognition of contributions to the development of the carpet industry. Outstanding craftsmen were also honoured for their dedication and excellence in preserving this historic art form.Karlin Makhpirov, head of the Kazakh Turkic Culture Foundation, emphasized the enduring value of traditional craftsmanship in the modern era.
He described Turkmen carpet weaving as a vital cultural heritage, noting that even in the age of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and nanotechnology, preserving national identity remains essential.“This is the cultural heritage of the Turkmen people—their ancient art of carpet weaving. Even in the 21st century, this craft has not lost its qualities or its integrity. In an age of nanotechnology and artificial intelligence, preserving the national identity remains a fundamental attribute for every nation,” Makhpirov said.
A key highlight of the event was the awarding of the title “Honoured Carpet Maker of Turkmenistan” to Jennet Dzhumageldyeva, who has devoted more than 30 years to mastering and advancing the craft. She expressed pride in her lifelong work, noting that she has created dozens of intricate pieces and remains committed to passing her skills on to future generations.Across Turkmenistan, a series of related events—including exhibitions, academic conferences, competitions, and cultural programs—were organized to promote and preserve the traditional art of carpet weaving.
