Philippine Navy Celebrates 128th Anniversary, Commissions New Offshore Patrol Vessel

The Philippine Navy marked its 128th anniversary on Tuesday by commissioning its newest offshore patrol vessel, BRP Rajah Lakandula, in a move that underscores Manila’s efforts to strengthen its maritime defence amid escalating tensions in the South China Sea.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Philippine Navy headquarters in Manila, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. emphasized the navy’s enduring role in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty.“For over a century, the Philippine Navy has stood watch over our waters, defending our sovereignty and protecting our people. It continues to do so amidst evolving security challenges that require even greater vigilance,” Marcos said.

The commissioning comes as the Philippines faces increasingly frequent maritime confrontations with China, raising international concerns over freedom of navigation and regional stability.Manila has repeatedly criticized Beijing’s growing use of “grey-zone” tactics and assertive maneuvers within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, prompting a shift toward a more self-reliant and capable defence posture.Highlighting the broader security landscape, Marcos noted that “global instability, shifting alliances, and emerging threats” necessitate a stronger naval force.

He added that a credible Philippine Navy remains essential to maintaining peace in the region.Built by South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, the BRP Rajah Lakandula is designed for long-range patrols and territorial defence. The vessel features advanced combat management systems, stealth capabilities, and enhanced firepower. It is expected to be deployed immediately to the West Philippine Sea to strengthen maritime presence and deter foreign incursions. The warship is the second of six offshore patrol vessels planned under the Philippines’ naval modernization program.

Meanwhile, China continues to assert sovereignty over contested areas such as Scarborough Shoal, maintaining that its activities in the region are lawful. Beijing has also called on the Philippines to halt what it describes as provocations and actions that could destabilize regional peace. The anniversary event coincided with ongoing naval deployments to assist in relief operations following an earthquake that struck Mindanao a day earlier, highlighting the navy’s dual role in national defence and humanitarian response.
