Rwanda has taken a significant leap toward its digital future by approving the establishment of a National Artificial Intelligence Agency. The move is aimed at accelerating the development, adoption, investment, and governance of AI to drive the country’s digital transformation and economic growth.The decision was finalized during a Cabinet meeting held on June 8, chaired by President Paul Kagame. With this step, Rwanda joins a growing list of nations creating dedicated institutions to lead and coordinate national AI strategies.
The newly approved agency will play a central role in promoting AI innovation across key sectors, while also establishing a strong framework for responsible governance, attracting investment, and building local expertise and skills in artificial intelligence.This development aligns with Rwanda’s broader vision of strengthening its digital economy through continued investment in technology, innovation, and digital public infrastructure.In addition to the AI initiative, the Cabinet also approved the draft budget for the 2026/27 fiscal year.
The budget prioritizes job creation, industrialisation, agricultural productivity, and macroeconomic stability—key pillars of Rwanda’s long-term development strategy.The creation of the National Artificial Intelligence Agency underscores Rwanda’s ambition to become a leading player in Africa’s AI landscape, leveraging emerging technologies to boost economic development and transform public service delivery.
