The draw for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, to be hosted by Saudi Arabia, has been rescheduled to May 9 in Riyadh following escalating tensions in the Middle East that disrupted regional sporting schedules, the Asian Football Confederation said on Wednesday.Originally planned for April 11, the draw will now take place at the historic At-Turaif District in Diriyah, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The AFC stated that the postponement was necessary to ensure full participation from all member associations, as travel restrictions and security concerns affected movement across several countries.Rising instability in recent weeks—linked to U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran—has impacted airspace access, logistics, and scheduling of international sporting events across the region. Several football federations faced challenges in confirming travel plans, while some competitions were postponed or cancelled due to safety concerns.
The AFC said it coordinated closely with the Saudi authorities and participating nations before finalising the new date, emphasising that the decision was made to maintain fairness and operational stability ahead of the tournament draw.Saudi Arabia will host the 24-team continental championship for the first time from January 7 to February 5. The tournament will feature top teams from across Asia competing for the title.So far, 23 of the 24 participating teams have secured qualification.
The draw will divide them into six groups of four teams each for the group stage.The final qualification spot will be decided on June 4 when Lebanon face Yemen in a playoff. Defending champions Qatar have already qualified, alongside strong contenders including Japan, South Korea, Iran, Jordan, Australia and Uzbekistan.Organisers said preparations for the tournament remain on track despite ongoing regional uncertainty.
