Ethiopia Forms New Government as Abiy Ahmed Secures Another Five-Year Term

ADDIS ABABA, Oct 6, 2026: Ethiopia has formed a new Federal Government following the inaugural session of the 7th House of Peoples’ Representatives, with the House electing Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed for another five-year term.The election followed Ethiopia’s 7th General Elections, which were held peacefully with more than 54 million registered voters. The Prosperity Party secured 438 of the 486 contested seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives.

Voting was conducted across 1,139 constituencies, including 501 constituencies for the House of Peoples’ Representatives and 638 for regional councils. International observer missions, including those from the African Union (AU) and IGAD, endorsed the electoral process as transparent.In his inaugural remarks, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the election had strengthened Ethiopia’s democratic culture despite the challenges faced during the process. He stressed that while political parties may win or lose elections, “Ethiopia has no losing children, only winners.”The Prime Minister called for national unity, saying Ethiopia can overcome its challenges by moving forward together. He also reaffirmed Ethiopia’s role as an important anchor for peace and stability in East Africa, emphasizing that the country’s regional standing is rooted in its own strength, resilience and popular support.

In a felicitation message, Ethiopian Ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Oumer H. Oba congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the parliamentary leadership and members of the House of Peoples’ Representatives on taking their official oaths for the new five-year term.The Ambassador described the formation of the new government as a reflection of the strength of Ethiopia’s democracy and the people’s commitment to democratic norms and values. He also wished Ethiopia continued peace, prosperity, development, unity and social cohesion.
