Five Romanian Nationals Safely Evacuated from Karakoram Region

Romanian Embassy and Pakistani forces carry out complex rescue mission.

ISLAMABAD, March 10: The Romanian Embassy in Islamabad, in coordination with Pakistani authorities, has successfully completed a complex operation to evacuate five Romanian citizens from the mountainous region of northern Pakistan and facilitate their safe return home.According to the embassy, the diplomatic mission received information that the five Romanian nationals were located in the remote Ushu Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan, an isolated area within the Karakoram mountain range.

The region is known for peaks rising above 7,000 meters and is currently considered sensitive from a security perspective.Due to recent regional developments — including tensions in the Middle East and security concerns along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border — the immediate evacuation and safe relocation of the individuals was prioritized.The five Romanian citizens had entered Pakistan on February 24 and recently contacted the Romanian Embassy in Islamabad requesting assistance for evacuation and repatriation.

Prior to this request, the diplomatic mission had not been aware of their presence in the area.With the cooperation of the Gilgit-Baltistan local administration, police, and the Pakistan Army, the embassy successfully located the group and arranged their safe transfer from Ushu Valley to Gilgit and then to Islamabad. Officials described the mission as a complex logistical and security operation that lasted more than 48 hours.

Following their arrival in Islamabad, the five Romanian citizens were safely placed on a flight from Islamabad to Istanbul. They are currently continuing their journey to Cluj-Napoca in Romania.Romanian diplomatic officials expressed appreciation to the local authorities, police, and the Pakistan Army for their prompt and professional cooperation, and also acknowledged the efforts of the embassy’s consular team for their coordination and dedicated work during the operation.
