ASTANA, Aug 22: Investment in Kazakhstan’s water management sector reached a record 677 billion tenge in 2024–2025, marking a 79 percent increase compared with the previous two-year period as the country accelerates efforts to modernize its water infrastructure.The investment, which is nearly 300 billion tenge higher than the 377.9 billion tenge recorded in 2022–2023, is being directed primarily toward the construction, reconstruction and modernization of reservoirs, canals, hydraulic structures and other facilities essential for ensuring a stable water supply for the population and agricultural sector.
A number of major projects are being implemented with support from international financial institutions. These include the construction of three reservoirs in the Zhambyl, West Kazakhstan and Kyzylorda regions in cooperation with the Islamic Development Bank, as well as the Yessil counter-regulator in Akmola region, supported by the Asian Development Bank.Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov said international cooperation was contributing not only financial resources but also modern technologies, digital solutions, scientific expertise and the exchange of best practices.
The government is also focusing on reducing delays in water infrastructure projects. Over the past three years, the number of long-delayed projects has reportedly been reduced by 47 percent, reflecting efforts to accelerate the modernization of the country’s water management system.The increased investment is expected to strengthen Kazakhstan’s water security and improve the reliability of water supplies for communities and agriculture.
