CIS Member States Highlight Legacy of Soviet Diplomat Sarvar Azimov at Islamabad Seminar

The Embassy of Russia in Pakistan, in collaboration with the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), hosted a seminar in Islamabad to honor the legacy of renowned Soviet diplomat Sarvar Azimov and his contributions to Soviet-Pakistani relations between 1974 and 1980.

The event brought together Ambassador Albert P. Khorev, ambassadors of CIS member states accredited in Islamabad, Chairman of the Association of Russian Diplomats Igor Khalevinsky, Chairman of ISSI’s Board of Governors Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, Ambassador for Russian Science and Education Dr. Shahid Hasan, Chairman of the Association of Pakistani Graduates from Russia and CIS Dr. Ashraf Nizami, along with prominent members of academic and diplomatic circles.

Delivering the keynote address, Anvar S. Azimov—retired Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Senior Research Fellow at MGIMO University—shared valuable insights into the life and legacy of his father, Sarvar Azimov, a distinguished Soviet statesman, writer, and diplomat.

Anvar Azimov highlighted that his father’s dedication, combined with deep respect for Pakistan, enabled him to build strong ties with the country’s leadership, including Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and later President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.

The seminar attracted significant interest, with participants emphasizing the importance of such engagements in preserving historical memory and fostering deeper understanding of bilateral relations.
