Islamabad Honors Space Pioneer with Grand Tribute on 65th Anniversary of First Human Spaceflight

Islamabad marked a historic milestone on April 12 as the Russian Embassy in Pakistan held a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at Fatima Jinnah Park to commemorate the 65th anniversary of humanity’s first journey into space by Yuri Gagarin.

The ceremony brought together a distinguished gathering, including Russian Ambassador Albert P. Khorev, Pakistan’s Additional Foreign Secretary Ayesha Ali, and envoys from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Senior representatives from SUPARCO and the Capital Development Authority also attended, alongside members of the Russian community and Pakistani academia.In his address, Ambassador Khorev highlighted that Gagarin’s legendary flight aboard Vostok-1 marked the dawn of space exploration, symbolizing humanity’s relentless pursuit of scientific and technological advancement. He paid tribute to the collective efforts of millions of Soviet citizens whose dedication made this historic achievement possible.

Speaking on behalf of the Government of Pakistan, Ayesha Ali expressed appreciation to the Russian Embassy for organizing the event and emphasized the growing partnership between Islamabad and Moscow. She noted that Pakistan values its expanding cooperation with Russia across key sectors such as energy, connectivity, education, and cultural exchange, adding that such commemorations deepen mutual respect and friendship.

The Russian Embassy also acknowledged the contributions of the International Charitable Public Foundation “Dialogue of Cultures – United World” and the St. Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange for supporting the installation of the Yuri Gagarin monument.The ceremony stood as a powerful reminder of a defining moment in human history and a symbol of enduring international cooperation in the pursuit of progress.
