Rwandan President Paul Kagame has described relations between Rwanda and Botswana as being driven by a “shared sense of purpose,” highlighting growing cooperation in trade, investment, and regional connectivity.
Speaking during a joint press conference alongside Botswana President Duma Boko, Kagame said both nations are focused on delivering practical outcomes through stronger bilateral collaboration.“What defines the relationship between Rwanda and Botswana is not only friendship, but also a shared sense of purpose,” Kagame said. “This is evident in the way we work together, and in our commitment to practical outcomes.”The Rwandan leader pointed to ongoing efforts in air connectivity, visa facilitation, and double taxation agreements as key measures aimed at easing investment and strengthening economic ties between the two countries.
Kagame also praised Botswana’s management of its natural resources, particularly its diamond sector, describing it as an example of forward-looking and people-centred leadership.“Botswana has consistently demonstrated what forward-looking leadership can accomplish,” he said.“The way you have managed your natural resources, particularly diamonds, reflects a deliberate effort to retain value, and translate it into real benefits for your people.
This is an approach that strongly resonates with us.”The remarks came as Rwanda and Botswana signed a series of bilateral agreements covering trade, investment, health, and air services during a broader diplomatic engagement.Kagame’s comments reflected his longstanding emphasis on self-reliance, value retention, and using national resources to deliver tangible benefits for citizens — principles that have also shaped Rwanda’s post-genocide economic transformation
