BAKU, Sept 3 (IN): The 14th Global Conference on Global Warming (GCGW-2026) opened in Baku on Thursday, bringing together nearly 200 scientists, researchers, experts and professionals from 30 countries to address pressing challenges posed by climate change and global warming.Co-organized by Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU) and Türkiye’s Yildiz Technical University, the three-day international scientific conference provides a platform for presenting new research, exchanging scientific knowledge and best practices, and strengthening international cooperation in climate and energy-related fields.
The opening ceremony featured addresses by Prof. Vilayat Valiyev, Rector of AzTU and Honorary Chair of the Conference; Dr. Rizvan Nabiyev, Member of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis; Prof. Ibrahim Dincer of Yildiz Technical University; and Prof. Subhan Namazov, Vice-Rector of AzTU and Chair of the Conference.The speakers highlighted the growing scientific and practical importance of addressing global warming and climate change, stressing the need for innovative technologies, advanced scientific approaches and stronger international collaboration.They noted that bringing together experts from different countries creates valuable opportunities to exchange ideas and expertise, establish new partnerships and develop joint research initiatives aimed at tackling global environmental and energy challenges.
Following the opening ceremony, participants took part in panel discussions featuring prominent international experts, including Prof. Damia Barcelo, Honorary Professor at the Faculties of Chemistry and Physics of the University of Almería, Spain; Prof. Fariborz Haghighat of Concordia University, Canada; Prof. Feridun Hamdullahpur of the University of Waterloo, Canada; Dr. Uygar Durgunay, CEO of ACWA; and Dr. Rashail Ismayilov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Water and Land Reclamation Scientific Research Institute under the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency (ADSEA).
Discussions covered a wide range of scientific and practical issues, including the impacts of climate change, the transition to green energy, sustainable management of energy and water resources, carbon emission reduction, transformation of energy systems and the application of emerging technologies.The multidisciplinary program of GCGW-2026 focuses on key areas such as renewable energy, hydrogen technologies, energy policy, energy efficiency, ecosystem protection, carbon reduction and the use of artificial intelligence in the energy sector.A total of 125 scientific papers were submitted to the conference, with 85 selected by international experts for presentation.
The selected research papers are expected to be published in internationally indexed scientific journals.Beyond the scientific sessions, GCGW-2026 is expected to facilitate new professional connections, joint research projects and international academic partnerships, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in climate change, sustainable development and energy.
The hosting of the conference at Azerbaijan Technical University is also seen as an important step in strengthening the university’s research capacity in sustainable development, green energy and innovative technologies, while expanding its international academic networks and enhancing its standing in the global scientific community.
