ISLAMABAD, June 30: The Embassy of Ethiopia in Islamabad hosted a tourism promotion event on Tuesday, bringing together diplomats, travel agents, media representatives, and digital influencers to highlight Ethiopia’s rich tourism potential and further strengthen bilateral relations with Pakistan.Prime Minister’s Advisor and Coordinator on Tourism, Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan, attended the event as the chief guest, while Hamid Asghar Khan, Additional Secretary (Africa) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was the guest of honour.
Welcoming the participants, Ethiopia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Dr. Oumer Hussien Oba, emphasized the deep historical and spiritual ties between Pakistan and Ethiopia, recalling the First Hijra to ancient Habesha, where early Muslims found refuge. He noted that the historic Al-Nejashi Mosque and the legacy of Hazrat Bilal Habeshi continue to symbolize the enduring bond between the two nations.Describing Ethiopia as the “Land of Origins” and one of Africa’s fastest-growing tourism destinations, the Ambassador highlighted the country’s breathtaking landscapes, world-class resorts, national parks, and modern infrastructure developed under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed. He also underscored Addis Ababa’s status as Africa’s diplomatic capital and pointed to Ethiopian Airlines’ direct Karachi–Addis Ababa flights as a major boost for tourism and connectivity.
Addressing the gathering, Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan praised the Embassy’s initiative for promoting people-to-people ties and commended Ethiopian Airlines for enhancing connectivity between Pakistan and Africa. He also announced a reciprocal influencer exchange programme, under which Pakistani content creators will visit Ethiopia, while Ethiopian and African influencers will be invited to explore Pakistan through complimentary tourism packages.Hamid Asghar Khan welcomed the launch of direct flight operations between the two countries, describing them as a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral relations. Reflecting on his visit to Ethiopia, he praised the country’s achievements in renewable energy, urban development, tourism, and the aviation sector.
