YouTube has rolled out its Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature globally, extending access to free users after previously limiting it to Premium subscribers in select regions, including the United States. The feature allows users to continue watching videos in a small floating window while navigating other applications on their mobile devices, enabling multitasking without interrupting playback.
PiP lets viewers minimise a video into a movable and resizable overlay, allowing them to respond to messages, browse social media or check emails while the content continues to play.According to the platform, the feature activates automatically when users exit the app during video playback, with controls available within the mini-player to pause, resume or return to full-screen mode. However, the company clarified that PiP for music videos will remain exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers, while free users can access the feature only for non-music, long-form content.
The move is seen as part of YouTube’s broader efforts to enhance user experience and adapt to growing demand for multitasking on smartphones.Industry observers say the global rollout is likely to help the platform retain and attract users by offering greater flexibility, while continuing to differentiate premium subscriptions through additional features such as ad-free viewing and expanded PiP access. The expansion of PiP underscores YouTube’s push to make video consumption more seamless, as the feature is expected to reach more users worldwide in the coming months.
