Moscow, July 27: Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the work of the State Duma during a meeting at the Kremlin on Sunday, saying lawmakers had played a crucial role in guiding the country through what he described as a period of historic challenges.Addressing members of Russia’s lower house of parliament ahead of the conclusion of its eighth term, Putin said the government and parliament had worked together to strengthen the country’s economy, defense sector and social welfare despite international pressure.
He stated that Russia had maintained its position as the world’s fourth-largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP), while acknowledging that inflation and other economic challenges remain. According to Putin, the Russian economy has become more resilient, enabling continued industrial growth and support for national priorities.The Russian president also claimed that Western sanctions imposed after 2022 had failed to weaken Russia, arguing instead that they had caused greater economic difficulties for the countries that introduced them.Speaking on security issues, Putin said Russia’s armed forces continue to defend the country’s interests and expressed confidence that Moscow would achieve its strategic objectives.
He also accused Russia’s opponents of shifting from battlefield confrontation to what he described as “terrorist attacks,” adding that Russia’s political institutions were prepared to respond to any threats.During the ceremony, Putin presented state awards to several State Duma lawmakers in recognition of their service.
According to State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin, the parliament adopted more than 1,100 laws during its current five-year term, with many focused on healthcare, education, family support, cybersecurity and social protection.Russia is scheduled to hold State Duma elections from September 18 to 20, 2026, when voters will elect 450 members under the country’s mixed electoral system.
