BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 31. Uzbekistan and the United Nations have agreed to further strengthen cooperation on sustainable development, international initiatives and regional priorities, the Uzbek presidential press service reported.The agreement was reached during a meeting between Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek.
The talks focused on expanding Uzbekistan’s cooperation with the UN and its agencies, as well as advancing joint efforts on sustainable development and other international and regional issues.Guterres congratulated Mirziyoyev and the people of Uzbekistan on the country’s 35th anniversary of independence, extending his wishes for peace, prosperity and continued development.Mirziyoyev praised Guterres’ contribution to strengthening ties between Uzbekistan and the UN and expressed support for the secretary-general’s initiatives aimed at reforming the organization.
The Uzbek president also highlighted the growing intensity of political dialogue and high-level exchanges between Uzbekistan and the UN. According to the presidential administration, Uzbekistan’s participation in UN elected bodies has expanded in recent years, while 15 UN General Assembly resolutions have been adopted at the country’s initiative.“Uzbekistan highly values the United Nations’ support for the country’s reform agenda and its sustainable development priorities,” the administration said.Guterres welcomed Uzbekistan’s progress toward implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals and reaffirmed the organization’s readiness to provide further support for the country’s efforts in this area.
The two sides also exchanged views on pressing international and regional issues and reviewed plans for upcoming joint events.The meeting highlights Uzbekistan’s growing engagement with the UN as Tashkent seeks to advance its development priorities while playing a more active role in multilateral diplomacy.Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining regular dialogue and expanding practical cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
