Aid Flotilla Sets Sail from Barcelona to Challenge Gaza Blockade

A second humanitarian flotilla is set to depart from Barcelona on Sunday, aiming to deliver aid to Palestinians in Gaza and challenge the ongoing Israeli blockade.Around 30 boats carrying medical supplies and essential aid are expected to leave the Mediterranean port as part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, with additional vessels likely to join along the route towards Palestine.

A similar attempt by the same organisation last October was halted by Israeli forces, who intercepted nearly 40 boats and detained more than 450 participants, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. The mission seeks to establish a humanitarian corridor to allow aid delivery into Gaza, where over two million residents continue to face shortages. While Israel denies restricting supplies, Palestinians and international aid organisations say the assistance reaching the territory remains insufficient despite a ceasefire agreement that included provisions for increased aid.Irish actor Liam Cunningham, known for his role in Game of Thrones, voiced support for the flotilla, stating that such initiatives highlight governments’ failure to meet their humanitarian obligations.

The World Health Organization has reiterated that under international humanitarian law, access to medical care must be ensured even during armed conflicts.Flotilla organiser Saif Abukeshak said the mission aims to open a humanitarian corridor to facilitate the entry of aid organisations.Meanwhile, activists from last year’s flotilla have alleged mistreatment during detention by Israeli forces—claims that Israeli officials have denied.
