Govt Reaffirms Commitment to Safeguard and Promote Press Freedom: PM Shehbaz Sharif

ISLAMABAD, May 02 (IN): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting press freedom, while ensuring a conducive environment for media to operate effectively.In his message on World Press Freedom Day (May 3, 2026), the Prime Minister appreciated the services of journalists, columnists, reporters, editors, and broadcasters in Pakistan and around the world, acknowledging their vital role in building an informed and enlightened society.He emphasized that timely, accurate, and unbiased dissemination of information remains the cornerstone of credible journalism.

He urged media professionals to uphold ethical standards by countering propaganda, fake news, and the spread of unverified information.Highlighting this year’s theme, “Shaping a Peaceful Future,” the Prime Minister said it reflects the demands of the current era. He stressed that journalists deserve to work in a dignified, secure, and enabling environment.The Prime Minister noted that responsible journalism and access to credible information play a crucial role in promoting global peace, alongside diplomacy. He added that media has the potential to foster constructive engagement and strengthen diplomatic, economic, and social ties among nations.

He reiterated that Pakistan is a peace-loving country that prioritizes dialogue and negotiation in resolving conflicts, and continues to play a positive role in promoting stability and de-escalation globally.Praising the national media, he said it had demonstrated responsibility during critical moments by promoting unity, countering misinformation, and clearly presenting Pakistan’s stance.He also paid tribute to journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty, calling their sacrifices a reminder of the value of press freedom.

The Prime Minister highlighted the growing influence of digital media, stressing the need for media institutions to adapt to technological changes responsibly while projecting Pakistan’s image effectively on the global stage.He warned that fake news and disinformation campaigns pose serious threats to national cohesion and credibility, urging journalists to maintain the highest standards of verification, integrity, and professionalism.Concluding his message, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s resolve to protect journalistic freedom and support media in fulfilling its responsibilities with truth and integrity, aiming to build a peaceful, strong, and globally respected Pakistan.
