Barrister Aqeel Malik Leads Pakistan’s Delegation at UN CAT Session, Reaffirms Strong Commitment to End Torture

At the 84th Session of the United Nations Committee Against Torture (CAT), Pakistan presented its national progress and reaffirmed its strong commitment to eliminating torture in all its forms.Barrister Aqeel Malik, Minister of State for Law and Justice, led the Pakistani delegation, which included senior officials such as Mr Abdul Khalique Shaikh, Secretary, Ministry of Human Rights; Mr Muhammad Arshad, Director General, Ministry of Human Rights; Ms Rabbea Hadi, Director General CPI; Mr Mian Farooq Nazeer, Inspector General Prisons Punjab; and Dr Muhammad Arif, Director, Ministry of Human Rights.

During the constructive dialogue with the committee, the delegation highlighted key legal reforms, strengthened institutional accountability mechanisms, and ongoing measures aimed at safeguarding human dignity. Pakistan also reiterated its resolve to uphold international human rights obligations and continue meaningful engagement with global partners on human rights issues.

The session underscored Pakistan’s continued efforts to align its domestic frameworks with international standards under the United Nations human rights system, particularly in advancing protections against torture and ill-treatment.
