NEW YORK, Sep 27: Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has described the Palestinian issue as one of the clearest tests of the international community’s commitment to upholding international law amid continuing violations in Gaza and the West Bank.
Addressing Indonesia’s national statement at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Sugiono said the strength of international institutions depends on the willingness of the international community to defend and enforce the principles of international law.He said the situation in Gaza and the West Bank reflects serious violations of international law and raises questions about the effectiveness of the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Geneva Conventions.
Sugiono said Indonesia’s own struggle for independence had shaped its longstanding solidarity with the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination.He reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to supporting Palestine until its independence and sovereignty are achieved through a two-state solution based on international law and internationally agreed parameters.“Palestine is not only a question for one region. It is a test of whether the multilateral system can uphold the principles it was created to defend,” he said.The Indonesian foreign minister stressed that international law must be consistently upheld despite ongoing efforts to reform global institutions, saying that respect for sovereignty and an end to colonialism remain essential to strengthening multilateralism.
Foreign Minister Sugiono represented Indonesia at the 2026 UN General Assembly and also participated in a series of high-level and bilateral meetings in New York.
