Jamaat-e-Islami to Hold Nationwide Anti-Inflation Protest in Islamabad on May 15

Islamabad: Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has announced a major protest in Islamabad on May 15 against rising inflation and increasing petroleum prices, saying that options including a strike and wheel-jam protest are also under consideration.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman said that the hike in petroleum prices is fueling inflation and placing an unbearable burden on the public. He claimed that according to the international market, petrol should cost around Rs271 per litre, but after adding Rs117 in levy and other taxes, the public is being forced to buy petrol at Rs401 per litre.

The Jamaat-e-Islami chief questioned why the impact of the ongoing regional tensions appears to be affecting only Pakistan, stating that petrol prices have not increased in the same way in India and Bangladesh. He further said that Jamaat-e-Islami would launch a public movement against inflation, with a large protest planned in Islamabad on May 15.
