Vietnam Strengthens Intellectual Property System to Drive Innovation and Economic Growth

HANOI: Vietnam is making significant progress in strengthening its intellectual property (IP) system, aiming to transform intellectual assets into economic value and enhance national competitiveness.

Speaking at the 68th series of meetings of the assemblies of the member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Minister of Science and Technology Vũ Hải Quân highlighted Vietnam’s active participation in the global IP system and its commitment to international IP standards.He said Vietnam has proactively implemented obligations under multilateral and bilateral agreements, contributing to the development of a modern IP framework that supports innovation and sustainable development.Officials from Vietnam’s Intellectual Property Office said the country has recorded major improvements in IP management, with businesses increasingly using trademarks, industrial designs, and other intellectual assets as tools for international integration and commercial growth.

The revised Intellectual Property Law, which came into effect in 2025, introduced important reforms aimed at simplifying procedures and reducing processing times, helping businesses secure faster protection for their innovations.Vietnam’s IP framework has also been aligned with international agreements, including the TRIPS Agreement, CPTPP, EVFTA, and RCEP, strengthening its position in the global innovation landscape.Experts noted that Vietnam’s next challenge is moving beyond IP registration and protection toward the effective commercialisation of intellectual assets.

The country aims to build a stronger connection between IP management and the national innovation ecosystem to help businesses create greater economic value.The Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam is expected to focus on digital transformation, modernising IP services, improving examination processes, and increasing cooperation with international platforms such as WIPO.
