The Embassy of Algeria in Islamabad commemorated the National Memory Day on May 8, 2026, under the slogan “A People Who Sacrificed and Triumphed,” marking the 81st anniversary of the tragic massacres of May 8, 1945.The ceremony was attended by embassy officials, their families, and members of the Algerian community residing in Pakistan.
The event began with the raising of the national flag, the playing of the Algerian national anthem, the recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha, and a minute of silence in honor of the martyrs.On the occasion, Ambassador Dr. Brahim Romani delivered a speech recalling the atrocities committed during the French colonial occupation of Algeria, particularly the massacres of May 8, 1945, in the regions of Sétif, Guelma, and Kherrata, where nearly 45,000 Algerians lost their lives.The Ambassador highlighted the values of patriotism, resistance, and sacrifice demonstrated by the Algerian people in their struggle for independence and preservation of their national identity.
He also praised Algeria’s achievements under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, noting the country’s growing role as a leading nation in Africa and an emerging state with a promising future.He further emphasized the Algerian government’s commitment to supporting and protecting its citizens abroad, strengthening their connection with their homeland, and encouraging their contribution to national development.
To mark the occasion, the Embassy also organized an exhibition titled “Sacrifices and Resistance of the Algerian People against the Crimes of French Colonialism through the Archives,” prepared by the General Directorate of National Archives at the Presidency of the Republic. The exhibition showcased historical archives reflecting the Algerian people’s struggle and sacrifices during the colonial era.The gathering also served as an opportunity to reinforce unity, solidarity, and ties between the Algerian community in Pakistan and their homeland, while strengthening relations with the Embassy.
