JAKARTA: Indonesia has achieved a landmark breakthrough in food security, with Agricultural Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman announcing record production across several key agricultural commodities, reinforcing the country’s drive toward greater self-sufficiency and sustainable economic growth.The minister said Indonesia has reached significant production milestones in rice, maize, large chillies, cayenne pepper, consumer sugar, chicken, eggs and shallots.
He added that improved output has not only met domestic demand but also enabled exports of several agricultural commodities.Sulaiman highlighted that the Government Rice Reserve has surpassed 5 million tonnes, the highest level ever recorded in Indonesia’s history. He also noted that the country’s agricultural sector posted an impressive 5.74 percent GDP growth, underscoring its growing contribution to the national economy.According to the minister, the achievement is the result of the government’s farmer-focused policies, including higher purchase prices for unhusked rice, more efficient fertiliser distribution, and reduced prices for subsidised fertilisers, all of which have boosted productivity and strengthened food resilience.
President Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed that food security remains one of Indonesia’s top national priorities, stressing that a nation’s progress depends on its ability to ensure an adequate food supply for its people. He said expanding productive agricultural land, improving water management systems, and providing continued support to farmers will remain central pillars of the government’s agricultural strategy.
The latest success follows another major innovation by Indonesia, which recently became the first country in the world to introduce B50 biodiesel, a fuel containing 50 percent palm oil, further demonstrating the country’s leadership in agriculture and renewable energy.
