Lukashenko Warns Against AI Becoming ‘Weapon of Mass Destruction’ at EAEU Summit

ASTANA — Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has called on Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) member states to ensure that artificial intelligence remains a peaceful technology and does not evolve into a “weapon of mass destruction.”Speaking during the expanded meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Astana on Friday, Lukashenko said artificial intelligence presents both major opportunities and serious security risks for the future.“AI is an important driver of competitiveness and economic growth, but it also poses significant security challenges.

Just as the world once faced the consequences of nuclear technology, our shared task today is to ensure that artificial intelligence remains peaceful and is not transformed into a weapon of mass destruction,” he stated. The Belarusian leader stressed that amid rising global instability, EAEU nations must continue strengthening economic integration and cooperation rather than slowing down joint efforts. He noted that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have already triggered shortages of fuel, critical raw materials, and mineral fertilizers in several countries, warning that the global economic impact could intensify further.“Whatever the external pressures may be, we must not slow down the implementation of the Union Treaty goals.

Our priority should remain strengthening our internal economic and industrial systems,” Lukashenko said.He also urged member states to maintain momentum in trade negotiations with India and Tunisia, while confirming that agreements with Mongolia and the United Arab Emirates are expected to come into force later this year. The Supreme Eurasian Economic Council and Eurasian Economic Forum meetings are being held in Astana on May 28–29, bringing together leaders from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan to discuss trade, industry, energy cooperation, transport corridors, and digital transformation across the union.
